What's that? You're just going to step out onto your patio and pick some Calamondin to make yourself a cocktail? Dang, you're cool.

Meet the Calamondin tree, an excellent citrus tree for first-timers. Growing fruit takes patience and the right conditions (most importantly, loads of light) but if you've learnt a thing or two from caring for your indoor plants and are ready to try something new, this is the one for you.

Also known as Calamasi, Calamondin, Philippine lime, Philippine lemon.

What's a Calamondin? Similar in taste to a lime or a lemon, Calamondin fruits look like a miniature orange when ripe. It's actually a cross between a kumquat and a mandarin and has a signature tart flavour that's ideal for using in cocktails, desserts or marmalade.

Why choose Calamondin over lime or lemon trees? Compared to lime and lemon trees, Calamondin is much easier to grow in pots and is a much more forgiving tree when grown indoors, especially through the winter when other citrus trees really struggle. It's also a more productive tree and if its needs are met it can fruit and flower all year round.

Can I keep my plant outdoors? This plant can be kept outdoors in the BC Lower Mainland from late April to late September or when overnight temperatures are consistently above 10 degrees Celsius. Outside of these months, the plant will need to be kept inside, close to a window, and under a powerful grow light to keep it growing and healthy.

Care

Difficulty Intermediate. Requires specific conditions and experienced care to grow.

Light High light. Place this plant in a location where it can it will have a wide view of the sky with prolonged exposure (4-6+ hours) to direct sun each day, like a South or West facing window. For best results and the most flowering and fruiting, supplement the natural light with a powerful grow light from late Summer to early Spring. Not suitable for low light spaces.

Water
Regular watering. Check soil moisture using your finger or a moisture meter and water thoroughly when the top 25% of soil is dry; approximately once every 5-7 days when kept outdoors and once every 7-10 days when kept indoors.

Soil
Use a blend containing 50% our Tropical Soil with 50% Cactus Soil for a light, airy soil that drains quickly. Consider substituting some of each soil for 10% Perlite for an even lighter mix.

Other

Fertilizing Use our balanced, liquid fertilizer with each watering to encourage growth. For even more vigorous growth and fruit production, use a fertilizer that is high in Nitrogen or a fertilizer formulated specifically for Citrus.

Indoor pollination In order to produce fruit when indoors, the flowers of your tree will need to be pollinated by hand. This can be done with a small paint brush, Q-tip or cotton swab. Gently dab the dusty, yellow portion of each opened flower (this is the pollen) and move from flower to flower until you've touched each one.

Outdoor growing This plant can be kept outdoors on a balcony or patio in the Lower Mainland of BC from Spring to Early fall or when nighttime temperatures are consistently above 10 degrees Celsius.

Leaf / fruit/ flower drop During the Fall and Winter or after your plant is brought home or moved to a new location, your plant may drop some leaves, fruit or flowers as it adapts to its new environment. This is normal and with continued care, it will begin to grow and product flowers and fruit again.

  • See the plant you'll get

We take photos of each new batch of plants at our in-house studio to ensure that the plant you receive is nearly identical to the one you see online. Don't agree? We'll pick it up and provide a full refund, no questions asked.
